What is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein found in the skin of all mammals that forms a major component of skin. It is used to replace the collagen a patient loses naturally as they age and plump out wrinkles. Common areas which collagen is injected include:

• frown lines between the eyes
• horizontal forehead wrinkles
• deep smile creases around the mouth (known as nasolabial folds) and lip wrinkles

The effect is a younger, smoother, and healthier facial appearance.

What can you tell me about the procedure and recovery?

After a topical numbing medication takes its effect, the collagen is injected underneath specific areas to eliminate the wrinkles. After the injection some swelling is to be expected but pain medication is not necessary. Patients can return to work and normal activities immediately.
