What happens during hair removal treatment?

Your laser aesthetician will evaluate your skin type and hair type and input your unique parameters in the Sciton system which will determine your safe and effective treatment settings. She will then discuss the treatment with you and test an area of skin. The area of your skin that is to be treated will be scanned with high frequency automated scanner NdYAG laser or BBLight from the Sciton System. Treatment time will depend upon the area to be treated. A Saphirre Crystal Advanced Cooling System will always be immediately adjacent to your skin to remove heat as it inactivates and destroys the hair follicles to ensure a comfortable and painless treatment.

Can tan or dark skin be treated?

Tanned or dark skin can be treated safely, but always inform your laser aesthetician if you have been tanning, using tanning products, or exposed to the sun within the last three weeks. We will adjust your treatment regimen accordingly to give you the safest, most effective experience. This unique laser is distinguished by its ability to safely and effectively treat all skin types including Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Asian, Indian, and African American.

How does it work?

In response to the ever-increasing demand to remove unwanted hair on virtually any body area, the ability to offer superior results to the widest variety of patients is crucial. The Sciton ND YAG laser and BBL selectively target your hair producing follicles and destroy them with infrared energy. Unlike other processes the laser beam treats many hairs at once, making treatment of large areas practical thanks to the high frequency scanner. The Sciton system high frequency scanner employs a unique computer-guided scanning system that automates the treatment, ensuring that your skin is rapidly and evenly treated with minimal pain. The computer sets the parameters and places the beam in an optimum pattern for your skin to ensure a safe, fast, effective and gentle treatment.

What is the Growth Cycle of hair and why is that the reason I need more than one treatment session?

Timing is important because the hair on our body grows in cycles. There are three phases of hair growth per cycle: anagen, catagen, telogen. The first phase of the cycle is when hair removal works- anagen. It is the only phase of the cycle where the hair is still attached to the follicle and actively growing. The heat from the Laser then travels down the shaft of the hair and penetrates the follicle and destroys the follicle permanently. It will no longer be able to produce hair. There is usually about 30% of our hairs in the growing Anagen phase at any given time. This is one of the main reasons why a person needs multiple treatments for Laser hair removal to eliminate all of the hair.

Why is timing so important and how many treatments will I need?

Hair Removal is all about TIMING, TIMING, TIMING!! It is very important to keep your treatment intervals consistent. It takes approximately 2 months for the body hair to reenter anagen and new hairs to grow, and 1 month for the face hair to develop the next crop of active hair roots in anagen, which is the laser's target. It is essential that you keep your laser hair removal appointments so we can guarantee your hair removal procedure.

5 to 8 treatments spaced 1-2 months apart are usually needed, although more treatments are occasionally necessary to reach complete hair removal.

How much hair will grow back and how fast?

After each treatment there will be a reduction of hair anywhere from 20% to 30%. After each treatment you will notice the hair will still grow for approximately two weeks. After that your hair will start to "shed". How much hair you have in the Anagen phase at the time of the treatment will dictate the amount of hair loss there is.

How can I get the best value for my treatments?

To get the best results for the smallest number of treatment sessions, please read these guidelines below carefully! Avoid waxing, sugaring, tweezing or anything that pulls the hair from the root. Without the actively growing hair root there is no highway for the heat from the Laser to enter the follicle. The areas to be treated should be protected from the sun including no exposure to tanning beds or outdoor tanning. Protect the area with an SPF of 30 or more. If you are dark skinned or have an old tan you can still have treatments with our machine safely. We can treat any and every skin type from African American to Scottish and everything in between.

What kind of results should I expect?

Laser/Light technology has been proven to create a permanent hair reduction in the number of regrowing hairs following each treatment in most skin types. The number of treatments required depends on several factors related to your specific kind of hair and skin. A customized laser hair removal treatment program will be designed for you along with an estimate of how many treatments you may need in order to meet your expectations.

Are there any possible side effects?

Side effects are rare. You may experience some slight reddening or local swelling at the site of hair removal, but this typically goes away within hours. On rare occasions, some blistering or discoloration may occur, but typically resolves quickly. Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimize the risk of complications. Following the treatment, you can generally return to work and resume all regular activities immediately.
