Why would I want to have nasal surgery?
The purpose of nasal surgery can be functional (to improve your ability to breathe), or cosmetic (to change the size, shape, and appearance of your nose), or both.
It is helpful in restoring your nasal function and appearance after sustaining a traumatic injury (a broken nose) caused by sports activities or automobile accidents.
On the other hand, many patients seek plastic surgery of the nose to improve their appearance and facial harmony. By making a large nose smaller, wide nose narrower,
or long nose shorter an improvement in facial balance can be achieved. Some patients seek to refine and improve the definition of their bulky or bulbous poorly defined
nasal tip. While others simply desire to have a hump removed on the nasal dorsum to better their facial profile. Although the possibilities are endless, Dr. Awada will
tailor an operation for you to compliment your facial features and specifically address your desires. View nose surgery photos.
What is the difference between rhinoplasty and septoplasty?
A rhinoplasty serves to improve the external appearance and external structure of the nose. A septoplasty, on the other hand, focuses on correcting the internal structure
of the nose to allow for an unobstructed airway passage and improve the ability to breathe.
What can you tell me about the procedure and incisions?
Depending on what needs to be corrected, nasal surgery can be performed with an internal or an external incision. In general, if a significant amount of tip work and extensive
correction of external nasal structure is required, then a small camouflaged incision is placed on the nasal columella (the under side of the nose between the nostril, also known
as an open rhinoplasty. Otherwise, minor changes in the nose (such as a dorsal hump reduction or septal surgery) are performed through internally placed nasal incisions. The surgery
will vary from 1-3 hours in length based on the extent of change and correction required. It is performed in our accredited surgery center or hospital as an outpatient day surgery.
What should I anticipate about the recovery?
Oral medication will usually control the pain or discomfort following surgery. If you require nasal bone remodeling, then the swelling, bruising, and pain will be greater.
However, the majority of facial swelling and bruising should resolve in 7-10 days and can be camouflaged by makeup to allow a return to light work and social activity. If you
sleep with your head elevated following your nose surgery, then you will find that your swelling subsides much faster. Strenuous exercise and activity is not recommended for 3
weeks and you should plan to avoid contact sports for a minimum of 3 months. A nasal splint may be used for one week to assist with attaining the desired shape and minimizing
postoperative swelling in select patients.
What other tips do I need to be aware of?
If your surgery is needed for medical reasons due to nasal airway obstruction, then Dr. Awada will send your medical information to your insurance company for their determination
of possible coverage. However, if your surgery is being done to improve the look of your nose, it is considered cosmetic in nature and will not be covered by insurance.
